Taking the right steps immediately after you discover that you have been the victim of an identity theft is extremely important. Some of the steps which you should immediately be considering are.
1. Place a fraud alert.
Placing a fraud alert is undoubtedly the first thing you should do. Failing to do so will just put you more at risk. By failing to do this, you will provide the thief with more room to use your details. There are two types of fraud alert that are available to you.An extended or initial fraud alert. You should use an extended fraud alert if you have already been victim of a crime. This ensures that activity is only permitted on your account after personal identification. The other type of fraud alert is that of the initial fraud alert. You can choose to do this type of alert if you suspect that you might soon be a victim of identity theft. For instance if your wallet gets stolen and you strongly suspect that your credit cards are going to be used, you can have an initial fraud alert placed before the thief gets round to using it.
2.Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
Once you have done with this, the next step is to consider opening a new account. You will for example need to acquire new credit and ATM cards. Take time out to write to the various establishments. Whilst you undoubtedly will still need to call the companies, writing them a letter will ensure that you and they have a better record of the event. Most credit institutions will request for this anyway.
3. File a report with the correct agencies
Cases of identity theft are taken very seriously. You should not keep the incidence to yourself. Once you are done protecting yourself, make sure that you file a report of the incidence with the affected agency. It is advised that people who have been a victim of an identity theft, file a report with the local police force and one with the federal trade commission.
In conclusion it is important that you become more careful. Carelessness and not criminal ingenuity is found to be one of the major causes of identity theft.
